Linux Security for Beginners

This course covers Linux security basics, and is designed specifically for people who are new to Linux and need to understand how to properly secure and maintain Linux systems. Linux is very similar to other UNIX variants, but very different from the Windows operating systems that most people are most familiar with.

This course is designed for people who are new to Linux, as well as those newly tasked with securing Linux systems but having some familiarity with UNIX. The beginning of this class will include a quick introduction to the command line tools that we will be using throughout this course. You will be using, and will learn about, command line tools that can help you in securing and administering to Linux systems.

Using this CD, we will examine:

  • File system layout and its importance to security
  • File permissions
  • Extend file attributes and features specific to Linux
  • File system types and their security implications
  • Users, groups, home directories, and related files
  • Device files
  • Passwords on Linux systems
  • Other authentication methods
  • Network services
  • Hardening Linux systems
  • Patching and maintaining Linux systems
  • SELinux

Please note: Attendees must bring their own Intel-based laptops that can boot from a CD.
